Community & Social Studies

It can be a challenge to ask personal questions to help you better understand a difficult situation that is affecting a friend, colleague, or neighbour. And when you do, answers may be brief, unsatisfying, or hard to grasp due to cultural differences.

Community & Social Studies is designed to give you more knowledge about areas that are often not talked about openly. You will learn about many of the complex issues impacting Khmer communities, deepen your understanding of how these are shaped by the cultural/ Buddhist worldview, and learn the vocabulary needed to help you to build deeper relationships with people – for work or simply as a part of your community.

The course covers the following, and more: rural vs urban communities, the importance of family, mental health, addiction, poverty & debt.

Khmer Popular Culture 

G2K Level 3 or equivalent required for fluent English speakers/ G2K Level 6 or equivalent required for those who speak little or no English -  free placement test available for new students.

Modern Cambodian culture is always changing and evolving. In this course, you will discover how the country's food, arts, and even clothing are shaped by ancient traditions of the Angkor period, recent history and modern-day influences. 

Improve your listening and reading skills while learning new vocabulary that you can use in everyday situations. 

The Khmer Popular Culture course covers the following and more: food, clothing and appearance, Khmer literature, religion and festivals, music and dance.

Exploring Buddhism

G2K Level 6 or equivalent required – free placement test available for new students.

Buddhism is a big part of culture in Cambodia, and influences many Cambodians' worldviews, daily decisions, and conduct - even if they do not consider themselves religious. The Exploring Buddhism course teaches you key religious principles and beliefs, along with language that enables you to discuss Buddhism with Khmer people. 

This course is perfect for anyone with an interest in learning more about Buddhism in Cambodia, and how different people interact with the principles, festivals and traditions of the faith. 

In addition to learning from Khmer people throughout the course, you will also participate in a personal research project designed to encourage you and your classmates to reflect on what you've learned in class, go out and talk with Cambodian friends and colleagues, and report back to your classmates. 

The Exploring Buddhism course covers the following, and more: the history of Buddhism in Cambodia, 21st century Buddhist beliefs, daily practices in urban and rural settings, the influence of spirits, responsibilities towards the dead, religious festivals and traditions.

Khmer for Healthcare

G2K Level 6 or equivalent required – free placement test available for new students.

Health is a popular topic in daily conversations – having an understanding of health and healthcare in Cambodia is useful whether you work in healthcare, social services or just hope to connect more deeply with friends, colleagues, and people in your community.

The course covers the following, and more: basic health vocabulary and illnesses; asking and answering health-related questions; advocating for patients at healthcare facilities; describing symptoms; how to take medication; nutrition; pregnancy.

Christian Studies

This course offers a general introduction to basic Khmer Christian language, and is based on practical real-world encounters that you might find in your communities, churches or your work. For more details on the content of each level, please get in touch.

Biblical Studies

G2K Level 10 or equivalent required – free placement test available for new students.

This course builds on what was learned in Christian Studies 1 - 3. It is designed to help you grow your confidence in reading the Khmer Bible, enabling you to lead a Khmer Bible study and have discussions about key Bible passages.

Basic Literacy

This course is an excellent introduction into Khmer literacy. Learn the alphabet, how letters join together to make words and some key sight-words (recognizing words when you see them). In 10 weeks we can get you reading. You just need to have a basic level of speaking and listening – G2K Level 3 or equivalent.
